Zakaria Zubeidi, l’un des fondateurs du Théâtre de la Liberté et un des leaders de la résistance est menacé.
Aujourd’hui, 29 décembre 2011, Zakaria Zubeidi, le cofondateur, le supporter ardent et guide du Théâtre de la Liberté, a été averti par l’Autorité Palestinienne que les autorités israéliennes ont révoqué son amnistie. Cette amnistie lui avait été accordée en 2007 par le cabinet du premier ministre israélien lorsqu’il s’est retiré de la résistance armée. Selon l’accord d’amnistie il pouvait demeurer en sécurité dans le district de Jénine contrôlé par l’Autorité Palestinienne sans que l’armée israélienne ne cherche à l’arrêter ou à l’assassiner.
Après avoir été le leader de la résistance armée pendant la seconde intifada, depuis 2006, Zubeidi s’est consacré à la résistance culturelle non-violente à travers le théâtre. Il a fondé le Théâtre de la Liberté avec Juliano Mer Khamis qui a été assassiné cette année par des assaillants inconnus. Dans le camp de réfugiés de Jénine, le Théâtre de la Liberté est un lieu culturel qui utilise l’art comme forme de résistance à l’occupation.
Zubeidi est devenu un des principaux avocats de la résistance non-violente par l’art. Ainsi que le dit Zubeidi : “nous avons utilisé la résistance armée pour représenter notre cause dans l’Intifada, puis nous avons décidé de suivre le programme d’amnistie de l’Autorité Palestinienne et de cesser la résistance armée ; ainsi j’ai continué ma résistance contre l’occupation par la résistance culturelle et le Théâtre de la Liberté est l’une des institutions que je soutiens pleinement.”
Pourtant, aujourd’hui à 16h l’Autorité Palestinienne a été contactée par l’armée israélienne qui l’informait que l’amnistie dont jouissait Zakaria Zubeidi était révoquée et qu’il avait une heure pour se présenter. Son téléphone lui a été retiré et il est en grand danger.
Aucune raison n’a été donnée pour cette soudaine suppression de son statut d’amnistié. Le Théâtre de la Liberté considère cela comme une nouvelle étape dans les attaques et le harcèlement continus auxquels le Théâtre de la Liberté est soumis depuis quelques mois; y compris des attaques contre le théâtre par les Forces Spéciales israéliennes, des arrestations nocturnes répétées de ses membres et des convocations de son personnel comme de ses étudiants à se présenter à des interrogatoires.
– Quelles que soient les raisons que donneront les autorités israéliennes pour ce revirement cynique, il compromet le suite du travail du Théâtre de la Liberté dans sa défense de la résistance non-violente et il met Zakaria en danger, dit Jonatan Stanczak, le troisième cofondateur du Théâtre de la Liberté.
– Zakaria s’est toujours conformé aux conditions mises à son amnistie, tout en soutenant une intifada culturelle, aussi cette nouvelle est un réel choc dit Jacob Gough, un ami de Zubeidi, associé de longue date du Théâtre de la Liberté.
Le Théâtre de la Liberté condamne vigoureusement ces actions et tient à insister sur le fait que la vie de Zubeidi est vraiment en danger. Le Théâtre de la Liberté exhorte tous ses amis à contacter l’Autorité Palestinienne, la DCO israélienne de Jénine, les représentations israéliennes de vos pays, les parlementaires, pour exprimer l’opposition à cette mesure et soutenir Zakaria Zubeidi.

Zakaria Zubeidi one of the founders of the Freedom Theatre and leaders of the resistance under threat
Today, 29th December 2011 the co-founder, avid supporter and mentor of the Freedom Theatre, Zakaria Zubeidi, has been told by the Palestinian Authority that his amnesty is being revoked by the Israeli authorities. This amnesty agreement, granted in 2007 by the Israeli Prime Minister’s office was in return for Zubeidi’s ending of armed resistance. The amnesty agreement allowed him to remain safe inside the Palestinian Authority district of Jenin where the Israeli military would not seek to arrest or assassinate him.
After having been the leader of the armed resistance during the second Intifada, Zubeidi has since 2006 committed to cultural, non-violent resistance through theatre. He founded The Freedom Theatre together with Juliano Mer Khamis, who was assassinated earlier this year by unknown assailants. The Freedom Theatre is a cultural venue in Jenin Refugee Camp, that uses the arts as a form of resistance against occupation.
Zubeidi has become one of the main advocates for non-violent resistance through the arts. As Zubeidi states: “We used armed resistance to represent our case in the Intifada, and then we decided to follow the PA’s amnesty program and give up armed resistance, so then I continued my struggle against occupation through cultural resistance, and The Freedom Theatre is one of the institutions that have my full support.”
However, today at 16:00 the Palestinian Authority was contacted by the Israeli Army informing them that Zakaria Zubeidi’s amnesty was removed and that he has an hour to hand himself in. His phone has been taken from him and he is in grave danger.
No reason has been given for this sudden withdrawal of Zubeidi’s amnesty. The Freedom Theatre regards this as yet another stage in the continued attacks and harassment that The Freedom Theatre have been facing for several months; including attacks on the theatre by Israeli Special Forces, repeated nightly arrests of its members and demands that both staff and students hand themselves over for interrogation.
– Whatever reasons the Israeli authorities will give for this cynical turn-around, it further jeopardizes the work of The Freedom Theatre in advocating non-violent resistance and puts Zakaria’s safety at risk, says Jonatan Stanczak, the third co-founder of The Freedom Theatre.
– Zakaria has always kept to the conditions of the amnesty whilst supporting a cultural intifada, so this news comes as a complete shock, says Jacob Gough a friend of Zubeidi’s and long time associate of The Freedom Theatre.
The Freedom Theatre strongly condemns these actions and wishes to emphasize that Zubeidi’s life is in real danger. The Freedom Theatre urges all its friends to contact the Palestinian Authority, the Israeli DCO in Jenin, your local Israeli representation and parliamentarians to
voice opposition to this move and show support to Zakaria Zubeidi.
